Financial Support

All students are guaranteed stipend, tuition and Northwestern student health insurance (if they opt-in) as long as they remain in good academic standing within the NUIN program. For the first six quarters, NUIN students are supported by Northwestern University fellowships. For the seventh quarter and beyond, students are supported by their research adviser or department, internal or external graduate fellowships (e.g., NRSA, NSF, Northwestern University Presidential Fellowship).

For 2023-24 year, the stipend will be $38,508.

Additional provisions provided by the NUIN program include:

  • Reimbursement for the available Northwestern University–sponsored HMO student dental insurance plan
  • A one-time allowance of $1,000 to help offset moving expenses, $1,500 if moving from out of the country.
  • A one-time allowance of $2,000 after completion of the thesis proposal (to be used for a research-related expense)

All students are eligible for Northwestern University Student Health Insurance. A subsidy covers the full cost of insurance premiums. International students are required to enroll.
