Ca2+ is one of the most important second messengers across all kingdoms of life and impacts all aspects of cell biology. α-Synuclein (α-syn) is a small lipid binding protein whose misfolding results in a group of neurological disorders collectively known as synucleinopathies such as Parkinson Disease, Dementia with Lewy Bodies and Multiple Systems Atrophy among others. We have found a critical link between Ca2+ deregulation and α-syn toxicity. The main focus of my laboratory is to understand the basic mechanisms of Ca2+ signaling relevant to neuronal physiology and to synucleinopathies using diverse model systems, from yeast to mammalian neurons.
