I am involved in neuroimaging investigations with colleagues at the Center for Advanced Imaging. I am studying clinical applications of quantitative MR strategies such as Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) and Magnetization Transfer Imaging (MTI). These approaches can be used to measure microstructural changes in tissue status that are otherwise unobservable. Ongoing studies will determine whether specific measures derived from DTI and MTI, can detect and monitor HIV-induced neuropathological changes across time. The quantitative MR indices are evaluated in the context of measures of disease progression (CD4 counts, viral load in plasma and CSF), various immune activation markers (e.g. MCP-1, sFas & TNF-alpha provided by collaborators at Johns Hopkins University) and extensive information concerning cognitive status. Collaborators on these projects at Northwestern University include Dr. Robert Edelman (Radiology), Dr. Leon Epstein (Neurology) & Dr. Bruce Cohen (Neurology).
